An elderly couple in Bosnia have covered their VW Beetle in more than 20,000 handmade small oak pieces which were glued to the bodywork and then varnished. The car can be driven legally.

Futuristic solar powered car race

Around 100 futuristic solar powered cars raced around a Grand Prix circuit in Japan in what’s been called the Alternative Energies Cup. And fortunately for the organisers the sun was shining.

There were none of the fumes or noise that mark the F1 Grand Prix, but still plenty of excitement as the cars glided quietly to the start line.

Whereas other solar car races tend to follow straight lines, the 5.81 kilometre (3.610 mile) Suzuka track has climbs and hairpin curves. One of the cars, Sky Ace TIGA, averaged 71 kilometres an hour (44.12 mph). Some solar cars can achieve even higher speeds of more than 100 kilometres an hour.
